Tough Questions for Tommy Stinson

What’s the weirdest thing you two(TS an PW) ever did together?

“One night we were in L.A., staying at the Hyatt on Sunset Boulevard. As a dare, we told this cab driver we’d give him a hundred bucks to drive us backwards all the way to Small’s, which was a bar on Gower and Melrose. He actually did it! He went down Sunset, crossed down Fountain, the entire way in reverse.
I don’t know how we didn’t get pulled over by the cops, but it was funny
as shit”.

Stinson’s “rootsy” new album includes a Westerberg part-kind of…..

In an interview before his show next Friday at First Avenue — his first local gig with his own band in about five years — Tommy Stinson let it slide that Paul Westerberg had a hand in the making of his new solo album. Unfortunately, it sounds like that hand mostly got severed…….

Tommy Stinson playing First Ave May 20th

My paulwesterberg.net inbox is usually filled to the brim with email. Most of them are requests for Paul (who I am not) to play somewhere or like this (and I quote), “I’m a great admirer of you and your music! I would therefore be very happy if you could send me 2 handsigned (autographed) photos of you.”

You have no idea how much self-restraint it takes to not sign a few photos of myself. Specifically this one from my junior year in high school (rock on 1987).

So you must forgive me that it’s taken so long to pass on this notice from Gimme Noise about Tommy’s upcoming show at First Ave, where they try to stir up some rumors about how might join Tommy on stage.

Tickets are $12 at First Ave’s site.

In the Blogs: The quality not quantity edition

In the Blogs

Comedy Central has a list of the Five Funniest Replacements Songs. Oddly enough, “Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out” and “Gary’s Got a Boner” are not on the list.

DFactor points out that Tommy’s got second billing on the Chinese Democracy myspace page. You can also listen to a stream of the album. Are you gonna buy it?

Wild Tyme has a good piece on Our Man Paul’s 49:00.

The Current’s Musicheads are making a list of singers who aren’t “good” but who you love anyway. Check the comments to see who made the list (I did not make the list).

And another thing, that poll over there ——> there is a ONE VOTE DIFFERENCE. I think in the spirit of all things Minnesota, we should have a recount. What say ye?

The Strib: Westerberg & Stinson together again

Chris Rimenschnieder has an itty bitty piece on the Strib’s site about talking to Tommy Stinson on the phone about the recent reissues. He says that Tommy’s been noodling around with Our Man Paul and Michael Bland! Yowza.

Some things to get you pumped about tomorrow’s reissues

First of all, the Newsday story that features this gem:

So will the college-rock standbys reunite, perhaps?

“I think we still exist in some sort of fragmented form,” Westerberg says. “It’s just a question of whether he and I can ever get together again … that’s how close we are, I can’t even mention his — name.”

Typical Westerberg. He’s talking about his longtime bassist and foil, Tommy Stinson. “One day Tommy wants to sue me, the next he wants to jam. I think he’s in the jamming mood this week, but by the time he gets here we might just meet and fight.”

And then there are Bill Holdship’s liner notes for the reissued Pleased to Meet Me, which got the ax because they wanted different writers for each CD’s notes and they were gonna use Holdship for Don’t Tell a Soul.

One more chance to get it all wrong, or maybe get it half right?

This thread startin’ business is all complicated & shit…

Everybody read the Spin article, right?  All of a sudden Tommy has done a 180, & it seems the fabled reunion isn’t so much a fairy tale but a possibility.

I would never fault anyone for a pay check.  & If it happens, I’ll go, probably on more than one occasion.  Still, I can’t help being turned off by the idea.  The Mats have been many things over the years, but an oldies act sure-as-shit ain’t one of ‘em.

& I’m sorry, fuck precedence, it’s just not the Mats without Christopher Mars behind the kit.  If the man don’t wanna play, the man don’t wanna play.

However, if Paul & Tommy went into the studio/basement together & cut a new record…Then decided to tour in support…Now, that’s something I could get behind.  I could care less what the called themselves. Y’know they’re gonna bust out all the oldies, but the new material changes everything.

Even more than that, between Paul & Tommy, I think there’s real potential for a fantastic album.  & I  would love to hear it.

Curious about everyone’s opinion in regards to a Mats reunion.  & Let’s hear a little noise regarding a Paul & Tommy record.

Side Note:  Lately whenever there are rumors of a  Mats reunion, the Pixies are inevitably mentioned.  I just watched “Loud, Quiet, Loud” & the Pixies are the most un-fun band in the world.   Sesh, what’s the fucking point?
