Why “Tim”?
By thedroid | Filed under 'Mats Memories | Comments (3)
Does anyone know the official explanation for the title of the album? Because here’s the story I heard back in 85 or 86 from a friend. He was in college and working for the school newspaper. The paper’s music writer interviewed Westerberg before the album comes out, and of course he asks, “What’s the new album gonna be called?” Westerberg, still undecided and sick of answering the question, says, “I don’t know. What’s your name?” and the guy says, “Tim.” And Westerberg says, “You know what? We’re gonna call it ‘Tim.’ ”
I can’t vouch for it, but it sounds like it could be true.

By Jodi | Filed under PW News | Comments (9)
The Strib has a list of the bonus material that will be available on the September reissues of The Replacements’ Sire records, and in the comments mentions that on Saturday, July 19th there will be 49 minutes of NEW (I think) Paul Westerberg music available for download for only 49 cents.
Check back on Saturday to find the link to where you can download the 49 minutes of gloriousness.
P.S. If you didn’t see it in the comments DFactor has the YouTube videos of the Captiol Paul Westerberg documentary posted on his site. Sweet!

In the Blogs: The Happy Anniversary to the Bad Idea Whose Time Has Come edition

For those of you who are like me and don’t subscribe to rock and roll magazines like Spin, it was a delight to see The Replacements article go online. It’s a pretty great read. If you got the time give it a look.
If you haven’t been living under a rock you know that Rock Band 2 is set to include the ‘Mats’ “Alex Chilton” and a song off Guns ‘N Roses “Chinese Democracy.” Does that meant it includes two ‘Mats related songs?
Over at her Petal Pusher blog, Laurie Lindeen talks about how she has unwittingly turned into Nanny Narc.
I am linking to this record review for two reasons:
1. I know not one, but two people named Ryan Smith (and neither of them is the dude mentioned in the review)
2. I like the writing, and that the writer said, “It also could be the best six Paul Westerberg songs that Paul Westerberg neither wrote nor recorded. That’s a huge compliment (If you just said “Who?” just stop reading now and Google the genius that is Paul Westerberg, The Replacements, and head out and purchase his amazing solo work. Now. Really. Google. Now.).”
Finally, I have decided that today is our first anniversary. We made a few random posts in June of 2007 and one on like July 3, but it really seemed to get kicking in on the 16th of July.
Yay us!

In the Blogs: The nobody’s doing any good writing so I’ll tell you about this show edition

Someday, I am going to populate this list with nothing but links to The Replacements movie or the The Replacements cartoon or knee replacements. Why? Because that would make me laugh. I should have probably done it this week, because I didn’t find anything of interest to link to. Boo to the hoo.
However, if you’re looking local (Minneapolis/St.Paul) and you’re looking for something to do this Friday, June 6th, and you weren’t invited to my birthday party (because my birthday is June 6th), you should go check out the How Was the Show 6th Anniversary Birthday Bash at the Turf Club.
Why? Because I am sure it will be filled with cool kids, and because one of the bands (the 757s) was described thusly: “First things first: These guys are capital-L Loud. The music, which is a mix of The Replacements ragged thunder and The Who’s jetliner roar, ends up sticking in your grey matter almost immediately.”. So, duh, you should go.

- • Feed the Ogre has a disappointing run-in involving ‘Unsatisfied’ and his kids.
- • WOXY counts down the top 500 modern rock songs (Alex Chilton is the highest ranking ‘Mats song, weird)
- • I really liked Linnet’s piece about All for Nothing, mostly because she talks about how when you break up you lose half your record collection
- • Here’s a great piece about Joan Jett, whom we all love, right?
P.S. Stop by the NEW Forum and tell us about the first time you saw the ‘mats or Paul Westerberg or see why PW.net is better than rightsaidfred.com.
