In the Blogs: All’s quiet on the Westerberg front
By Jodi | Filed under In the Blogs | Comments (3)

It’s quiet down in westerbergville, so instead of a list of what people are talking about I am going to re-tell about the dream I had the other night. Feel free to add your own weird dreams in the comments, especially if they involve nudity.
This might come as a surprise to a lot of people coming from the woman who calls her web site I Will Dare, but I don’t have sexual, groupie-like feelings towards Paul Westerberg. In fact the thought of it kind of oogs me out.
So now you’ll understand my general feeling of heebie-jeebieness with regards to the awful sex dream I had about Mr. Westerberg last night. It wasn’t even a sex dream so much as a want-to-have-sex dream.
I am gagging a bit just recalling it.
So PW and I were in, perhaps an office building, a dorm, or a hotel with the room’s door open. People were milling about outside and he was trying to plan his next tour. I was helping, I guess. See, I wanted him to do three shows in Chicago and he only wanted to do one. I decided to con him into seeing things my way by rubbing my naked breasts all over him.
It worked. Barf.
And now whenever I close my eyes, all I can see is Paul in those blue sunglasses looking up at me from beneath my breasts.
Gag me.

In the Blogs: Great EPs, Dating Winona Mix Tape, & An Impossible Quiz
By Jodi | Filed under In the Blogs | Comments (0)

The Onion’s AV Club lists 21 good albums that would have been great EPs. Coming in at #8 The Replacements’ “Don’t Tell a Soul.” Go take a look at what they chose to cut, and then come back and tell us how wrong they were. (come on, I love “Darlin’ One”). [via Largeheartedboy]
I am Fuel, You Are Friends puts together a kickass mix tape (er, playlist) of songs by musicians Winona Ryder has been linked to. Really, go check it out, it’s great.
Rolling Stone offers up The Almost-Impossible Rock & Roll Quiz. I did really well after cheating. You’d all better get question 32 right.
AJ writes fondly of a favorite Paul Westerberg concert t-shirt and a how magical it was to see him in concert five times in 1993.
Jim over at Rehearsals for Retirement has an interesting Westerberg theory.
Tune in tomorrow for a round up of the latest buzz on All Over But the Shouting.
Previously on In the Blogs (which is really a misnomer, but I can’t seem to come up with a different title for this little feature, if you have any ideas e-mail me at qotu@paulwesterberg.net)

In the Blogs: A movie based on the ‘Mats, inconsistent live acts, and more
By Jodi | Filed under In the Blogs | Comments (2)

Rolling Stone reports that the band Black Lips have signed on to star in a movie called “Let it Be” loosely based on The Replacements. Interesting. If you were making this movie who would you cast as the ‘Mats?
Rob van Alstyne over are Reveille, asks about maddeningly inconsistent live performers and cites the infamous Ryan Adams’ meltdown wherein Adams called Westerberg a “bitter old bitch.” Alstyne, however, does not mention how maddeningly inconsistent Mr. Westerberg himself is when playing live.
The Guardian lists some of R.E.M.’s forgotten contemporaries including The ‘Mats, The Meat Puppets, and Jason and the Scorchers.
A Livejournaler is counting down the 100 best videos ever and has a nice write up of Bastards of Young coming in at #10.
I include this little tidbit about All Over But the Shouting mostly because it’s on a site called Visible Voice Books.

In the Blogs: Androgynous cover, Breakup and Crush songs, and All Over But the Shouting Reviews
By Jodi | Filed under In the Blogs | Comments (15)
Aquarium Drunkard offers up an unsual cover of The Replacements’ “Androgynous” by Blair, someone I’ve never heard of before but will be looking into post haste. The cover’s got a lot of piano which I kind of dig.
Grooveshark.com offers up a Soundtrack to a Breakup. It’s filled with some pretty good break-up songs, but it chooses Paul Westerberg’s “World Class Fad” — which is not what I’d have chosen. How about you? What Replacements or Westerberg song makes your breakup playlist (mix tape, CD, whathaveyou)?
And on the flip side, Velocity Weekly offers up a playlist full of Crush Songs and includes the brilliantly chosen, super appropriate “I Will Dare” (yes, I am biased).
Dating Rules for Sitcoms offers up a really poignant post about going to see Wilco, how it triggers a memory of seeing The Replacements and so so so much more. Go read it, it will be time well spent.
And now for the Honorary Jim Walsh, The Replacements: All Over But the Shouting: An Oral History review round up:
Harp Magazine reviews interviews Jim Walsh and reviews All Over But the Shouting.
Waved Rumor also weighs in with a review of the Walsh book.

In the Blogs: Choosing the Stones & the ‘Mats, more on Sound Opinions, and Bash and Pop
By Jodi | Filed under In the Blogs | Comments (4)

Writer Alex V. Cook talks about how when given the option he’d much rather listen to The Stones and The Replacements.
WXPN the Public Radio station out of the University of Pennslyvania is counting down the 885 most memorable musical moments and has The Replacements signing to a major label at 446.
Minneapolis Fucking Rocks offers a breakdown of Sound Opinion’s dissection of “Let it Be” (editor’s note: I can’t remember which one it was, but one of them claimed it was bacon and cigarettes, clearly his ears are broken).
Speaking of which, if you haven’t checked out the Sound Opinion’s featuring Jim Walsh dissecting “Let it Be” with Greg Kot and Jim Derogatis, you can check it out here.
James over at Pop Headwound offers up some opinions on the post-’Mats career of Tommy Stinson and Paul Westerberg and talks about how he liked Bash and Pop’s “Friday Night is Killing Me” more than “14 Songs.” Interesting. He also offers up a few downloads for those who haven’t gotten Tommy’s solo stuff.
Also, make sure you vote in the latest Poll. I am most impressed with myself that I fixed it.
Musicotica offers up some Paul Westerberg tracks from a 1996 radio appearance (I am not sure where or what radio station).
Also, I almost forgot, the David Bowie blog is now the BFF of this, the Paul Westerberg blog.
