Holy Triumvirate: Three ‘Mats songs and the women who should cover them
By Jodi | Filed under Holy Triumvirate | Comments (10)
Since posting that “Answering Machine” cover on Tuesday, I’ve been thinking of ‘Mats songs that I wish women would cover. Okay, that’s kind of a lie. I’ve been thinking about it since I typed that title up there. So here is my holy three wishlist:
- Liz Phair, If Only You Were Lonely
- Lucinda Williams, Here Comes a Regular
- The Donnas, Bastards of Young
I could probably go on and on, and I’m already thinking about a solo Triumvirate cover edition which would totally include Regina Spektor. Which women do you think should cover the ‘Mats?

Three things for your Saturday

1.) In case you missed it, Graeme Thompson (author of I Shot a Man in Reno. . . ) had a great piece in the Guardian UK about the ‘Mats. This is one of my favorite bits:
Westerberg’s creative division caused considerable internal tension. Tommy Stinson recalls that the band, particularly Bob Stinson, were uncomfortable playing Westerberg’s more introspective material. “We were full of testosterone, drugged-up drinking kids, and here’s Pauly with some fucking torch ballad. It was like, ‘Who wants to hear that shit, dude?’”
2.) Remember that sweet cover of Skyway by Baby Scream? Well he’s put out a record of called Nobody Seemed to Care that includes covers of Bastards of Young and Sadly Beautiful (you can listen to samples here).
3.) I am shocked, SHOCKED!, that Bastards of Young beat Left of the Dial in the cage match. There’s a new match over there now.

The Holy Triumvirate

I’ve pondered this idea for about seven minutes so you know it is right and true and well-thought out. But here are three most iconic ‘Mats songs of all time. Are you ready for this:
1. Can’t Hardly Wait
2. Bastards of Young
3. Here Comes a Regular
Shocked? Appalled? Yeah me too, because I Will Dare didn’t make the list. That would be number four. However, there are no fours in the triumvirates.
Do you disagree? Or am I totally right on the money?

How Foreigners View America. I’m not usually one to pimp Klosterman, but this is pretty funny and contains this bit of hilariousness:
Someone selected Ryan Adams. This made me happy for two reasons. The first is that I suspect Adams is something of an underrated semi-genius, and I like the fact that he’s more appreciated in places where nobody cares whether or not Paul Westerberg hates him.
Pointless Confession of the Week: I loathe the Tommy Stinson song “Without a View” it always leaves me lunging for the music player and pressing skip as fast as I can.
Laurie Lindeen will be doing a reading with Rockstar Mommy Judy Davide in Royal Oaks on July 27th. This may or may not be in the Chicago area. I cannot tell. But I suppose if you know where Royal Oaks is, you’ll be stoked.
5 Good Pop Culture References in Songs includes Bastards of Young.
