So, somehow over this busy, busy summer I have totally fallen behind the times. I have no idea what the hip, worthy jams are. In fact all I've been listening to is The Rolling Stones and Springsteen's Born to Run, because I've decided it's 30 years ago or something.
What are the new bands you're listening to that would totally be worth my time. What's the hip jam? (and don't say The Hold Steady, because I've already got that record).

Welcome to my world. Sometimes I am so sick of my ipod I want to throw it in the river. Everything I listen to is at least 10 years old. Stones, Clash, Replacements ……..not that it is bad but I wish I could find a new band…..one that I could conceivably see live. Although you big city folk are missing out on the biggest week of rock that Bismarck ND has had in quite a while…..Puddle of Mud tomorrow night and Alice Cooper on Saturday. I may actually go see Alice, I saw him several years ago and it's a good spectacle, even if you aren't into the music that much. But back to the topic…somebody help us out here!

check out Patty Hurst Shifter. I've only listened to a little of their music, but I've liked what I've heard:

Oh, and of course (thanks to Scooter) Marah. can't say enough good things about his band:

that's all I've got….

Ok, most of these aren't exactly “new” discoveries and you've probably already heard something by and formed an opinion on most of them, but I'll go for it anyway:
Ted Leo - pretty much the best thing going in music if you ask me
Mason Jennings - gets compared to Jack Johnson a lot, but I think Jennings is a lot more interesting and a lot more fun
The Star Spangles - cross between the New York Dolls and Slade with a bit of the Ramones thrown in
Portastatic - formerly the side project for Mac McCaughan from Superchunk, now his main gig and just as good
The New Pornographers - I didn't like their latest album quite as much as their last couple but still quite good
You Am I - been around a while now but still criminally underappreciated. Their last album was a killer.
The Figgs - ditto

I love The New Pornographers and hope someday to have Carl Newman's baby.
As soon as I finish writing this short story, I am going to check out the Star Spangles based on your description. The Dolls + Slade divided by the Ramones = awesome. I don't see it adding up any other way.
(p.s. I always hear more Dylan in Mason Jennings than anything else. I didn't know he'd been compared to Jack Johnson. That's a damn shame.)

Portastaic is fanastico.
Ive been listening to the new Notwist cd bunches…til 49:00 came out. Its not my usual cup o tea- but its purdy.
And for the rocker kids- go buy Jay Reatards singles collection- hell, buy any of his stuff. You will rock. Then you will roll. Then your hands will rise. Then, pinky and pointer fingers will extend. Then you will feel self conscious and turn the volume down and carry on as usual.
