New Paul Westerberg: 3oclockreep & Finally Here Once

You can download the album which is called “3oclockreep” from Tunecore for $3.99. It consists of two tracks, one called “3oclockreep” which clocks in at 20:08 and the other called “Finally Here Once” which comes in at 3:27. I think Our Man Paul is trying to nickel and dime us to death. I haven’t downloaded either song yet. But I think something must be up, I mean this is odd.

    So is there any place to buy the original 49:00 if, say, hypothetically, a fan missed it because he’s so freakin’ old skool (or just old) that he’s never bought any mp3s before, still preferring actual hard copies of everything?

    No Dee Dee Smarty Pants. I’ve never read A Clockwork Orange. i found the movie so detestable that I never went back to read the book.

    I can’t talk about these new releases right now, because I CAN’T DOWNLOAD THEM.

    I’m an idiot and used an e-check instead of my credit card (because I am not so good with the paypal) and they won’t let me download it until my “check” clears which they’re thinking might be oh, MONDAY!

    It’s OK. I’ve only run thru it once, but nothing to go crackers about. By that I mean it’s not 49:00.

    The stand alone track is fine but the theater theme strikes me as a gimmick before the tune ends.

    The long track sounds like 49:00 B-sides (is that possible?).

    At the half way mark it turns to old studio chatter with Paul, Tommy & Tom Waits. Interesting…they stumble thru a few tunes, never really starting & finishing any of ‘em.

    Closes with a Blues number, & funny Paul bit.

    3oclockreeps reminds me of the Norfolk show where you wondering when the wreck will stop and then he goes and sings something that breaks your heart. I can’t believe you are complaining new material. “Finally Here Once” is as well crafted and straight forward as anything he’s done. I’m really liking 21st century Paul.

    Ok, so here’s a question to ponder: Is this whole “throw something up online for download as soon as its finished and record companies be damned thing” more than just a phase or an experiment? Have we seen the last of Paul releasing a physical album through a record label?

    And would that be a good or bad thing?

    There’s always more to Paul than meets the eye. He’s doing this deliberately. I think there could be a couple reasons. Either he makes more money issuing music this way or he feels like he has more freedom to create the album without the stress, expectations, packaging, etc. crap involved in a physical CD release. It’s his music, on his terms, without exception. And frankly, even if he is nickel and diming us, he deserves the money for what he’s doing.

    In all seriousness, I do hear an update or an answer. I hear a follow up to bastards and sadly beautiful.
    And the same shitty production and sentiment I heard in Fuck School 20 years ago, well, I hear the exact same follow up in (Tell ‘em all) Go to Hell. Its exactly what I’ve always loved about Paul. Hes the same guy, just making music that’s his age. He’s never changed his POV, just his perspective through time. He’s always been the same guy with the same moral(dont know if thats exactly the right word) code, and as he’s aged, so have I.
    I feel like hes been lost the last decade. And the music he’s making now is the exact live 1-take spirit that makes Sorry Ma my favorite album of all time. I pretty much put all my musical hopes in a box set rarites Twin/Tone release.
    They coulda boxed this last months effort in a box and sold it for 80 bucks and told me it was from 86, and I woulda bought it hook line and sinker.
    Pretty amazing stuff coming outta a 50 year olds basement in Minnesota.
    Fuck.
    He’s almost 50 lol.
    Sigh.
