Cover Band: Replacements Rock Around The Clock
Posted by Wolfdog | Filed under Cover Songs
Bar bands usually have certain ‘fall back’ covers to lean on when the gig outlasts their material (or attention span). When in doubt, go to Chuck Berry, Elvis, Buddy Holly…. or this classic from Billy Halley And The Comets.
Don’t need to remember the words, just get the key phrases out there.
And let Bob rip.

In the Blogs: That I can’t think of a clever title edition
Posted by Jodi | Filed under In the Blogs

The Groupie Hall of Fame is amusing reading.
Rock and roll conspiracy? One dude seems to think Paul Westerberg is to blame for one person’s death.
Here’s an interesting interview with Liam Finn, who is like the new It-boy and if you don’t know that you’ve been living under a bigger rock than I have, where the interview claims to have listened to nothing but the ‘Mats and Tom Waits for a year.
iTunes and Immiseration from The Atlantic about the possibility of an iTunes all you can listen to subscription plan, manages to mention the ‘Mats and Smoo (Schmoo here). How rad is that?
Entertainment Weekly lists the Indie 25, bands that defined each year from 1984 to the present.
Licorice Pizza has “It Ain’t Over Until the Fat Roadie Sings” available for download.

Video Tuesday — A woman covering ‘Can’t Hardly Wait’
Posted by Jodi | Filed under Cover Songs, Seen Your Video
Aside from the plinky, plinky Casio Keyboard, this isn’t a bad cover at all. I think more chicks need to cover the ‘Mats.

Beowulf

There once was a man from Uranus
Whose dream was to not quite be famous
He called himself Paul
He’d rise but to fall
His lack of Gold records should shame us

T‘was born in the fifties like Stingle
To howl and to mumble and single
He’d scream with a shriek
Then warble quite bleak
And once he even dared to jingle

Opportunity knocked a few times
Offered riches for some simple rhymes
He said yes and no
Seen that video
He passed up crisp fifties for dimes

Over the years he paid his dues
This songwriter without a clue
But radio shrugged
The basement, it tugged
And off he went into the blue

So music poured out through the years
Songs filled with fake drums and real fears
He keeps us bemused,
Transfixed and transfused
Cause if not, then why is he here…
Paul Westerberg at Austin City Limits Festival, really?

I have no idea if this poster announcing the line-up for this ACL Event is bogus or not, because it sounds too good to be true.

In the Blogs: I took a nap so that’s why this is so late edition
Posted by Jodi | Filed under In the Blogs

There’s a trailer up for “Let it Be” the movie based on the ‘Mats. Take a look and tell us what you think. [via Late Night Wallflower]
Also, you should know that I only took a nap because I have the plague and who the hell gets sick with spring knocking on their door? I do, that’s who. My life, it blows.
There’s a new poll over there ———-> You should go vote and settle a raging debate. Incidentally, a lot of y’all need to take a giant chill pill. You know that banter about how wrong someone is about choosing Sorry Ma over Let it Be can be friendly. Seriously, it’s not like I Will Dare was calling Sorry Ma a dope smoking moron or anything, though it totally should have! Damn, we’re ‘Mats fans aren’t we supposed to be filled with piss and vinegar encased in a crusty carapace of bitterness?
If you only read one thing this week, read this: Sucking in the Seventies: Paul Westerberg, the Replacements, and the Onset of the Ironic Cover Aesthetic in Rock and Roll (It’s Only Rock and
Roll But I Like It) [via KEXP blog]
Incidentally the student newspaper of the University of Lethbridge knows that Let it Be is an underrated masterpiece.
That is all this week, I am going to go vacuum the sludge out of my lungs. Have a good week!

Cover Band: The Replacements Do Motorhead
Posted by Wolfdog | Filed under Cover Songs
Ever imagine The Mats performing with the artists they have covered? It’s easy to imagine them fitting in with the likes of The Kinks, The Who, and The Stones in their glory.
But Motorhead? Surely they were too metal for the punk scene. But Lemmy was punk before they had a genre for it. And Ace Of Spades is the perfect song to attempt to sonically flatten a Duluth roller rink.

In the Blogs: All’s quiet on the Westerberg front
Posted by Jodi | Filed under In the Blogs

It’s quiet down in westerbergville, so instead of a list of what people are talking about I am going to re-tell about the dream I had the other night. Feel free to add your own weird dreams in the comments, especially if they involve nudity.
This might come as a surprise to a lot of people coming from the woman who calls her web site I Will Dare, but I don’t have sexual, groupie-like feelings towards Paul Westerberg. In fact the thought of it kind of oogs me out.
So now you’ll understand my general feeling of heebie-jeebieness with regards to the awful sex dream I had about Mr. Westerberg last night. It wasn’t even a sex dream so much as a want-to-have-sex dream.
I am gagging a bit just recalling it.
So PW and I were in, perhaps an office building, a dorm, or a hotel with the room’s door open. People were milling about outside and he was trying to plan his next tour. I was helping, I guess. See, I wanted him to do three shows in Chicago and he only wanted to do one. I decided to con him into seeing things my way by rubbing my naked breasts all over him.
It worked. Barf.
And now whenever I close my eyes, all I can see is Paul in those blue sunglasses looking up at me from beneath my breasts.
Gag me.

I’ve been singing this song for a week. A WEEK. Do you know what that does to a person? Welcome to my insanity.
