Cover Band: The Replacements Do The Who

Carrying over a theme from a Kinks cover, here’s the young Mats ripping through the uber-classic Substitute in 1981. The boys would have made decent mods.

PS - I have a fair amount of material to sift through to find more covers, but would appreciate an special requests or submissions.

Cover Band: The Replacements do The Kinks

As Jim Walsh’s book gives witness to, the Mats frequently played the role of a cover band live. Many times the covers were delivered with purpose and practice. Sometimes they were tossed off in bits and pieces seemingly killing time. Either way covers seemed to be solely a way for them to entertain themselves.

So, in the dorky fashion I rolled out way too many Can’t Hardly Wait’s…..here’s a series of live Mats covers. Starting with The Kinks…

All Over But the Shouting — an inital reaction roundup

Over at Idolator, Jackin’ Pop editor Michaelangelo Matos writes about how he was ultimately unsatisfied by All Over But the Shouting but also slams the midwest and the Twin Cities in particular for a “kind of self-defeating ironic triumphalism.” [Jodi's note: Pbbbttt!]

Sarah Askari reviews the book for City Pages and includes this interesting, and now that I think about it, true aside, “Those in search of Westerberg’s humanity might want to turn to Petal Pusher, the recently published memoir by his second wife, Laurie Lindeen. True, she captures an older, sober version—but in more personal detail.”

Eric R. Danton of the Hartford Courant is none-too-thrilled with All Over But the Shouting because he longs for a narrative structure to the book. A few weeks ago, I, Jodi, Queen of the Underground, gave Walsh props for managing to construct a narrative structure through quotes. What say you?

Jim DeRogatis of the Chicago Sun-Times does a roundup of recent rock and roll books and gives a shout out to both All Over But the Shouting and Petal Pusher.

Pitchfork gives a nice rundown of upcoming Jim Walsh events in support of All Over But the Shouting.

Wings for Wheels talks a bit about an upcoming podcast he’s going to do with Jim Walsh and about the song “Achin’ to Be.”

P.S. Don’t forget that Walsh will be on 89.3 The Current’s Local Show at 5 p.m. on Sunday, November 18. Not in the listening area? Check out the Live Stream.

In the Blogs: Great EPs, Dating Winona Mix Tape, & An Impossible Quiz

In the Blogs

The Onion’s AV Club lists 21 good albums that would have been great EPs. Coming in at #8 The Replacements’ “Don’t Tell a Soul.” Go take a look at what they chose to cut, and then come back and tell us how wrong they were. (come on, I love “Darlin’ One”). [via Largeheartedboy]

I am Fuel, You Are Friends puts together a kickass mix tape (er, playlist) of songs by musicians Winona Ryder has been linked to. Really, go check it out, it’s great.

Rolling Stone offers up The Almost-Impossible Rock & Roll Quiz. I did really well after cheating. You’d all better get question 32 right.

AJ writes fondly of a favorite Paul Westerberg concert t-shirt and a how magical it was to see him in concert five times in 1993.

Jim over at Rehearsals for Retirement has an interesting Westerberg theory.

Tune in tomorrow for a round up of the latest buzz on All Over But the Shouting.

Video Tuesday — The Mystery First Glimmer Performance

Okay, I’m not gonna lie. I love it when you all geek out and talk about the most arcane details of certain live performances. I love when you can pinpoint where the hell Paul’s playing based on song and outfit and stage. It’s not that I even care to know or to commit such things to memory. We all know that I’m the worst obsessed fan ever. But I love that you guys know — that’s what’s awesome. So, I think that makes me all y’alls obsessed fan. Or something.

So here’s another challenge First Glimmer somewhere (please don’t let the fact that Paul’s hair then matches my current “hairstyle” alarm you):

Jim Walsh on 89.3 The Current’s The Local Show (tomorrow, I think)

UPDATE: So yeah, I am tuning into The Local Show right now, and Walsh won’t be on until November 18. That is all.

First of all The StarTribune has the “I Will Dare” excerpt from All Over But the Shouting. The Strib also says that Walsh is going to (or has been, I am unclear) on 89.3 The Current’s “The Local Show” “today”. Which would mean that he was gonna be on November 9th (yesterday).

However, the Local Show is on Sundays at 5 p.m. So something is fishy. If I were you, I’d hook up with the live stream tomorrow (Sunday, November 11).

Also, Chris Riemenschneider has a write up about the book.

The Mats influence

I love when I run across Mats stuff at random.

Insubordination Records is a pop punk music label that puts up a podcast on a semi-regular basis. Glancing at this week’s offering I was pleasantly surprised to find a Replacements track in there. Then it got me thinking about how much the Mats are sited as influences among the twentysomething crowd and especially among pop punk bands. I think I can safely say that I have seen the Replacements listed as favorite artist or influence for at least 20 pop punk bands. Now I know the Mats have been called a “punk” band based on their early output and attitude but I wouldn’t necessarily connect them with the current punk scene. I can see the Billie Joe Armstrongs and Ryan Adams of the world being influenced given their age and having experienced the band during it’s heyday. But it is cool to see the younger crowd getting into the Mats as well and nice to know that it isn’t just us old folks who are carrying the torch.

In case you are interested, here is the play list and link to the podcast…

In the Blogs: A movie based on the ‘Mats, inconsistent live acts, and more

In the Blogs

Rolling Stone reports that the band Black Lips have signed on to star in a movie called “Let it Be” loosely based on The Replacements. Interesting. If you were making this movie who would you cast as the ‘Mats?

Rob van Alstyne over are Reveille, asks about maddeningly inconsistent live performers and cites the infamous Ryan Adams’ meltdown wherein Adams called Westerberg a “bitter old bitch.” Alstyne, however, does not mention how maddeningly inconsistent Mr. Westerberg himself is when playing live.

The Guardian lists some of R.E.M.’s forgotten contemporaries including The ‘Mats, The Meat Puppets, and Jason and the Scorchers.

A Livejournaler is counting down the 100 best videos ever and has a nice write up of Bastards of Young coming in at #10.

I include this little tidbit about All Over But the Shouting mostly because it’s on a site called Visible Voice Books.
