All Over But The Drinkin’ - Mats Tribute At First Ave.
Posted by Wolfdog | Filed under Concert Review
Last night’s festivities at First Avenue in Mpls were advertised to promote Jim Walsh’s Replacements oral history, All Over But The Shouting. But mostly what was promoted was a reason to get like minded fans and musicians together and have a big ol’ sloppy fun hootenanny.
Walsh wasn’t so much a host or an emcee for the event, but rather a cheerleader (and sometimes playful pest) for his friends, the bands, and the audience. I would imagine he is taking it easy today after a long night of smiling, singing, shouting, drinking, hugging, signing, and hip-checking guitarists. He also gets points for playing a out-of-the-blue cover of Bittersweet Symphony.
The bands were exceptional from top to bottom. No matter if they were attempting spot-on covers, or spinning their own version of Mats’ classics (and some not so classic)
Here’s a general rundown of the music, as far as I can remember. (this tall boy had his fill of $3.75 PBR Tall Boys. memory gaps are inevitable)
From the mainroom:
The Evening Rig - Solid band that did a pretty straight-up job of playing Valentine, Waitress In the Sky, and Kiss Me On the Bus
The Alarmists - Damn good band. did a damn fine job on Left Of the Dial, Swinging Party, The Ledge, and I Will Dare. (for the record, the singer sang “bacon and cigarettes’. But he is like 20 years old, so what does he know)
Revolver Modele - Industrial/Goth rock versions of Johnny’s Gonna Die, Color Me Impressed, and Unsatisfied. If you’re gonna cover Unsatisfied, rockin’ the pulsing goth/dance beat is the way to go.
One For The Team - they looked a bit hippie-ish, but rocked solid. I’ll Be You, Nevermind, Beer For Breakfast, and Can’t Hardly Wait along with a horn section. Very sweet.
Honeydogs - Just a flat out awesome rock band. Totally underrated. Answering Machine, Sixteen Blue, Darlin’ One, and a great Kids Don’t Follow.
Birthday Suits - Great high-energy guitar/drums two piece band. Slugged out Fuck School, Stuck In The Middle, and Goddamn Job in record time.
From the Entry:
At times it was tough getting into the Entry. Packed to the gills. The vibe in the Entry was very hootenanny-ish. Terry Walsh, Martin Devaney, and friends made a joyful mess of a sound for most of the night. A ’spirited’ Date To Church was of note.
Also of note from the Entry was Brian Vanderwerf of Chooglin’ covering an unreleased Replacements outtake, Don’t Get Married with a band including two acoustic guitars, banjo, glockenspiel, trombone, and tuba. Probably was my favorite song of the night.
If this is how book release parties go down, I’ve been missing all the literary fun. And that’s pretty much what this night was, fun. What else do you need on a Wednesday night? Let’s do this again, soon.
Chris Riemenschneider’s take on the evening from the Star Tribune.

I know many of you are distraught about yesterday’s lack of the “In the Blogs” feature. I’m sorry. I was busy. I went to go see Jim Walsh read and then I had a short story due for class and then I got laid off from my job.
But I can promise you that tomorrow there will be a new and exciting giveaway here on Paul Westerberg.net. So stay tuned!
Video Tuesday — too busy to say much

Paul Westerberg.net: Now with more All Over But the Shouting!
Posted by Jodi | Filed under Books
Okay, in honor of the All Over But the Shouting book launch party at First Avenue on Wednesday, November 28th, at 7 p.m. I’ve gotten together all the latest hooha about the book, because I am good like that.
Also, as a warm up to the First Ave. shindig, Walsh will be at that Barnes & Noble in the Galleria in Edina, MN on Tuesday, November 27th and at the Electric Fetus in Minneapolis on Wednesday, November 28th at 5 p.m.
Dan Wilson (who just released the quietly beautiful album “Free Life“) formerly of Trip Shakespeare and Semisonic (and producer of my one of my all-time faves Mike Doughty) writes about reading All Over But the Shouting on tour and “it was kind of exhausting reading the words of so many friends, fans, and colleagues, all confirming my suspicion that the Replacements consciously avoided the success that we all wished for them.”
Vita.mn, the Strib’s alt weekly, gives the book and The Replacements a lot of ink (er or pixels I guess) with an interview with Walsh and some excerpts from the book.
At Reveille, Walsh himself writes about a Hootenanny and a lead up to the big launch party Wednesday (November 28th) at First Ave: The reason “If Only You Were Lonely” is such a universal song is because there’s no “if.” Everybody’s lonely. The Replacements made loneliness feel fun, like a sacrament.
John Davidson at The Big Takeover talks about how he, himself had considered doing and oral history and though he find some frustration with Walsh’s book is overall pleased with the end result.
The Austin Statesmen in Texas gives the book a great write up: But it made for some good stories, many of the best of them preserved in Walsh’s book. This is what people do when they’re no longer young enough to rock and roll all night and party every day. And it beats confronting the at-times discomfiting realities of being, belatedly, a grown-up: Bob Stinson is dead now, having worn out his body a dozen years ago. Tommy is on Axl Rose’s payroll and Westerberg is making quiet records in his basement. We’re bastards of old. Where’s the song about that?
P.S. You can listen to Walsh on the Don Shelby show, here and he’ll be on KFAN 1130 AM Tuesday at 2 p.m. with Chad Hartman and Brian Oake. I am not sure if you can listen on the web site, because the web site BLOWS.

Happy Black Friday! I hope you successfully purchased that wildly discounted electronic device at your favorite retail shop at an ungodly hour this morning!
In honor of this day of manic consumerism, I wish I had a Mats cover of Steely Dan’s Black Friday. But they never seemed to veer towards Fagen/Brecker songs.
So instead I will just post another Stones cover. Here’s Heart Of Stone from the Uptown Bar in 1985.

Happy Thanksgiving y’all!
This year, I’m thankful for the normal stuff. You know, family, friends, solvency, nutty bars, beer….. but this year I’m gonna add cowbell to the list.

In the Blogs: Book news, Beautiful Posts, and Jodi watched Nirvana Unplugged
Posted by Jodi | Filed under In the Blogs

For those of you who might be living under a rock and missed the big Blender Indie Rock list, “Let it Be” came in at #4 er, I mean #3 on the top 100 greatest indie albums of all time.
Dave Lifton over at Wings for Wheels has posted his podcast with Jim Walsh.
(this has nothing to do the ‘Mats, but I am watching Nirvana Unplugged from like 1993 or 1994 or whenever they were on the show [it was VH1 Classics today] and the whole time all i can think is “god, Kurt looks so young.” It weirds me out a little that I’m older now then Kurt Cobain ever got to be.)
If you’re a bonehead like me and forgot to listen to Jim Walsh on 89.3 The Current’s Local Show, they’ve posted the whole thing on the internet for youse. Also, just some more fair warning. Walsh will be doing a reading at the Barnes & Noble Galleria (in Edina, MN) on Tuesday, November 27th. Holy Hannah, there’s a who slew of events. Check them out on the (god I can’t believe I am saying this) MySpace page. Walsh will be on WCCO radio (830 on your AM dial) at 3 p.m. today with Don Shelby talking about the ‘Mats. I can’t tell if there’s a live stream or not, but from what I can tell, the audio will be added here at some point.
Dan Taylor over at Exploitation Retrospect writes a beautiful, thoughtful piece about his love affair with the music of the ‘Mats. Go read it. Now. You will not regret it. (Thanks to AJ for bringing it to my attention).
(sorry, I am still watching Unplugged, and really, I am about to cry listening to Kurt sit there with his guitar and his voice singing Pennyroyal Tea. How much you want to bet I lose my shit when they pull out In the Pines, In the Pines where the sun never shines?)
J’s indie/rock mayhem has a wonderful write up of Slim Dunlap’s “Old New Me” album. It’s really an interesting review. Also, I remember giving this album a bad, bad review when I was in college.
BookExpo America Leader, Lance Fensterman, hits some bookstores in NYC and discovers All Over But the Shouting. I like the part where he says if you don’t love the book and/or the ‘mats he will think less of you.
Okay, so this is interesting: Over at the Beachwood Reporter, Steve Rhodes makes an argument how Avril Lavigne is like The Replacements. You heard it hear first folks. Personally, I think his argument is kind of valid.
New York Magazine gives a short, but hearty endorsement to All Over But the Shouting, comparing the ‘Mats to Charlie Brown (which cracks me up because I just got down reading the kickass Schulz biography).
(in case you are wondering, they just got the Meat Puppets portion of Unplugged so, you aren’t gonna have to suffer through me crying during In the Pines. consider this your lucky day)
