Hello my most beloved Westerberds. Looky what came to me today. God, it’s days like this that I love being an Amazon Prime member. I haven’t started it yet. I hope to start and finish it sometime this weekend. However, I can’t read it right now because that would force me to stop looking at page 30:

That’s me! That’s me!
Can you believe it? I can’t. I still want to pee my pants with delight. So if a sucker like me can get it, I’m curious to know if any of y’all are in.
What page are you?

In the Blogs: The Craft interviews, A Q&A with Jim Walsh, and Rolling Stones’ HOT band from 1986
By Jodi | Filed under In the Blogs | Comments (2)

The Rock N Roll Hall of Fame finally posts Paul Westerberg’s interviews from The Craft series.
Pat O’Brien over at Reveille Magazine writes a letter to Jim Walsh thanking him for writing a book about The Replacements: “Of all the Minneapolis bands I like, The ‘Mats mean the most. They never left here, even when they did. When I was in LA recently and told someone where I was from they responded, “Hey, The Replacements!” instead of something lame about Prince and the color purple, which is what usually happens. I could have kissed them.”
Paulisded offers up an interview he did with Jim Walsh about the upcoming The Replacements: All Over but the Shouting, An Oral History:
Prime: What was the best show you witnessed?
Walsh: The night my brother and I rolled a garbage can up on stage and pushed it so it perfectly rested next to Paul. Who looked at it and his face said, “That’s about the size of it.”
Then they did “Rattlesnake,” I think. Bob got in it and during the solo he and the garbage can fell and it all spilled out and he jumped up, buck naked. Fucking magic.
Rolling Stone mentions how they picked The Replacements for their very first ‘Hot Issue.’
What to wear during an orange alert talks with writer Scott Stealy about writing, books, and music. Sure it only namechecks Paul Westerberg without discussing him, but the interview is thick with interesting talk about books, Axl Rose, and Kurt Cobain.
Blog of Rand discusses The Hold Steady’s “Stuck Between Stations” and how some songs are becoming dated because of the fast pace of technology: “It just wouldn’t be the same to hear Paul Westerberg warble “I hate your voice…..mail……”
More from 885 Most Memorable Music Moments: 225 The Singles Movie and Soundtrack.
You know what’s awesome about being the #1 contributor to Paul Westerberg.net? I get to push a musical agenda (take that! if you don’t like that, and you probably shouldn’t, you are free [and encouraged] to post and push your own musical agenda). So yes, I have a point. Apparently the delightful Sondre Lerche did the soundtrack for that new Steve Carell movie. And in this review the dude reviewing called Lerche “Norway’s incredible answer to Paul Westerberg.” Intrigued? You should be, go listen to Sondre Lerche on his web site.

It surprises me how cavalierly they handle the departure of Chris Mars.

All Over But the Shouting - Some Guts
By ElegantMule | Filed under Books | Comments (3)
I don’t know about y’all but I am hearing rumblings that the Jim Walsh book is already out in the stores. Funner though is the series of .jpgs on the publisher site - I had no idea it was a local publisher. Yes, it does matter. Anyway, seeing these makes me really want to get my hands on this book.

On Wilco, Better than Ezra and ‘Mats covers
By Jodi | Filed under Concert Review, Westbergesque | Comments (7)

As you can see, I went to see Wilco earlier this week. The set was tight and that little Nels dude can fucking rock the house. Seriously, the dude is like a demon. But this is not about Wilco. Afterall, this is Paul Westerberg.net and not Wilco.net.
This is about how, I was oddly disappointed that Jeff Tweedy and company didn’t bust out a ‘Mats cover during the concert. I really, really had my hopes pinned on them bursting into “I Will Dare” just for the fun of it and to pay homage to Paul and the boys. After all, I have an mp3 of them covering “Color Me Impressed” where Tweedy says, “Everything we are is because of the Replacements” or something to that effect.
And I wish I could say that this disappointment was only because of the aforementioned ‘Mats cover, but it’s not. I am oddly disappointed every time I go see a band/musician of a certain genre and they don’t do a ‘Mats or Paul Westerberg cover during their set. I am not sure why I’ve decided that everyone who comes through Minneapolis should throw down some props to the band, but I have.
Because I have made this decision you would think somewhere along the line I had heard a lot of bands cover The ‘Mats in concert. You could think that, but you would be wrong. The only band I’ve ever, ever heard cover the ‘Mats in a concert I was attending was Better Than Ezra.
I KNOW!
It was a concert called Music in the Park or something like that — Jayhawks, Mason Jennings, Better than Ezra and some other people I have long since forgotten. It was a somber affair because the concert happened just a few days after 9/11. I remember this because the Jayhawks were short a person because they were stuck somewhere and couldn’t fly because planes weren’t flying.
Anyway, Better than Ezra (whom I kinda love) sang “Skyways” and ever since I always expect everyone to cover the ‘Mats. Have you ever heard anyone cover the ‘Mats at a concert you were at?

Amazon Pre-order Promo, I think
By Jodi | Filed under Books, Westbergesque | Comments (3)
Huh, so I finally got around to pre-ordering my copy of All Over But the Shouting and I noticed when I checked out that I save 75 cents because of some pre-order promo, bring the book’s total price to $14.18. That’s a kickass price. I buy hardcovers all the time and I can’t remember the last time I got one (even from Amazon) for $14 and change. Git on over there and order it up people.

In the Blogs: Choosing the Stones & the ‘Mats, more on Sound Opinions, and Bash and Pop
By Jodi | Filed under In the Blogs | Comments (4)

Writer Alex V. Cook talks about how when given the option he’d much rather listen to The Stones and The Replacements.
WXPN the Public Radio station out of the University of Pennslyvania is counting down the 885 most memorable musical moments and has The Replacements signing to a major label at 446.
Minneapolis Fucking Rocks offers a breakdown of Sound Opinion’s dissection of “Let it Be” (editor’s note: I can’t remember which one it was, but one of them claimed it was bacon and cigarettes, clearly his ears are broken).
Speaking of which, if you haven’t checked out the Sound Opinion’s featuring Jim Walsh dissecting “Let it Be” with Greg Kot and Jim Derogatis, you can check it out here.
James over at Pop Headwound offers up some opinions on the post-’Mats career of Tommy Stinson and Paul Westerberg and talks about how he liked Bash and Pop’s “Friday Night is Killing Me” more than “14 Songs.” Interesting. He also offers up a few downloads for those who haven’t gotten Tommy’s solo stuff.
Also, make sure you vote in the latest Poll. I am most impressed with myself that I fixed it.
Musicotica offers up some Paul Westerberg tracks from a 1996 radio appearance (I am not sure where or what radio station).
Also, I almost forgot, the David Bowie blog is now the BFF of this, the Paul Westerberg blog.

Video Tuesday — I’m only dancing
By Jodi | Filed under Seen Your Video | Comments (1)
Crap. I almost forgot about Video Tuesday. Holy hannah, that’s some kind of bad news. I’ve been busy my friends. I promise to think of something brilliant and witty and insightful to say soon. I have vacation next week and my whole plan is to sit around in my pajamas writing stuff (you know when I am not busy trying to get Carl Newman to make sweet, sweet love to me by sending him the patented Make Sweet, Sweet Love to Me Vibe™ from the back of First Ave on Tuesday and of course I will only do that if I don’t first run away with Andrew Bird on Wednesday after the Wilco/Andrew Bird concert).
Here’s a video, it’s Paul Westerberg covering Bowie and that’s all kinds of rad, is it not?
