Video Tuesday — Popular Creeps
Posted by Jodi | Filed under Seen Your Video
I am not all that familiar with the solo careers of Bob Stinson, Slim Dunlap or Chris Mars. I have a vague notion of Tommy’s post-’Mats career. And well, Paul. . .
What I do know is that I love Mars’ song “Popular Creeps.” I only discovered this song because it was used as the theme for Mary Lucia’s Popular Creeps show when she was at Rev 105.
Here’s a video of the song.
P.S. In case you missed it. Spiteful Michael has an extensive collection of Mars’ art online.

What exactly makes Paul great?
Posted by liquidparallax | Filed under Westerberg Memories
I’ve been asked this question with much to say in praise of him, but he’s a character that is difficult to pinpoint the genius in. I see it most in his lyrics and musical delivery… The appeal for me is an emotional connection to the lyrics and interest in wordplay. Also his sound is pretty unique– Pleasant voice (albeit raw and maybe seldom out of key, not Frank Sinatra), varying arrangements (from rough demos to layered pieces).
So to all readers, why should Westerberg have a place with other music legends?

I forgot my one line so I just said what I felt

Okay. I’m working on this funky project thing that is going to remain shrouded in semi-secret for a bit here. However, in the creation of this semi-secret project I need some help from you, the smartest, most best Westernerds ever.
What I need is a great gob of Westerberg/’Mats one-liners. You know the lyrics that really kicked you in the teeth/ass/heart. Let me hear ‘em.
Trick is they need to be short, short, short 10-12 words max. The shorter the better.
Some of the ones I came up with on my own:
I will dare.
I hate music
Hot ‘un
(shut up, they do go beyond song titles, okay)
Playing makeup, wearing guitar
Wild & Lethal
My heart could use some glasses
Got it? Get to it. I need between 50-75 of these short little quips.

In the Blogs: Androgynous cover, Breakup and Crush songs, and All Over But the Shouting Reviews
Posted by Jodi | Filed under In the Blogs
Aquarium Drunkard offers up an unsual cover of The Replacements’ “Androgynous” by Blair, someone I’ve never heard of before but will be looking into post haste. The cover’s got a lot of piano which I kind of dig.
Grooveshark.com offers up a Soundtrack to a Breakup. It’s filled with some pretty good break-up songs, but it chooses Paul Westerberg’s “World Class Fad” — which is not what I’d have chosen. How about you? What Replacements or Westerberg song makes your breakup playlist (mix tape, CD, whathaveyou)?
And on the flip side, Velocity Weekly offers up a playlist full of Crush Songs and includes the brilliantly chosen, super appropriate “I Will Dare” (yes, I am biased).
Dating Rules for Sitcoms offers up a really poignant post about going to see Wilco, how it triggers a memory of seeing The Replacements and so so so much more. Go read it, it will be time well spent.
And now for the Honorary Jim Walsh, The Replacements: All Over But the Shouting: An Oral History review round up:
Harp Magazine reviews interviews Jim Walsh and reviews All Over But the Shouting.
Waved Rumor also weighs in with a review of the Walsh book.

Video Tuesday — It’s just a waste of time

In honor of the publication of Jim Walsh’s All Over But the Shouting. I dug up this gem from Pline taken from the Northampton, Mass show in August of 2002.
So, I am not sure if I heard this as urban legend, if it’s true, or if I made it up, but I figure one of y’all might know — did Nirvana name their record after this song?
